Keeping Item Type 0 "pure" (and I am only talking about Item Type 0) will forever allow communication compatability with ALL computers, of any era. With UTF-8, the worst that will happen is some junk characters, and that only if it uses non-ASCII characters to begin with. Any ASCII text is also UTF-8 text. (Besides, I'm pretty sure I've seen a few other encodings - Big5 comes to mind - on various Gopher servers anyway.) No virus found in this outgoing message.
