Instead of having a separate 5 second usocket:wait-for-input and fixed 0.5 
second wait for the item specifier to finish buffering, I changed it to use up 
to 5 seconds including between characters read, and to try returning something 
even if it times out.

I also had a good conversation with ratxue today about activity pub and the 
timeliness of a strong and intercommunicative modern text scene, which I will 
hopefully remember to talk about tomorrow at the lispy gopher show on 0000UTC
