Beat together butter, salt and vanilla until light. Mix brown sugar, flour, milk and chocolate chips into butter mixture. Roll dough into 1-inch balls. Place thumbprint into center to make space for chocolate filling. Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Place in oven; after 3 minutes, open oven and gently indent center of each cookie with your thumb. Bake 7 to 9 minutes longer. Remove and immediately roll in powdered sugar. Let cool completely on wire racks. To prepare chocolate filling: Beat together melted chips, shortening, corn syrup, vanilla and water. Using a small spoon, fill center with chocolate filling. Yield: 2 dozen cookies. Tester's note: Melt-in-your-mouth cookie for chocolate lovers. This is such a great-tasting cookie that I recommend doubling the recipe. Linda Bernard, Ritenour High School. "My best friend's mother made dozens and dozens of Christmas cookies ahead and froze them for her large family," says Linda Bernard. "She would have to make extra of this one because we would sneak into the freezer to enjoy these wonderful cookies." -----
