Place squash, onions, water and butter in a large kettle, cover, and simmer 25 - 30 minutes until squash is mushy. Uncover and simmer 10 minutes longer, mashing large pieces with a fork. Stir in all remaining ingredients. Transfer to a buttered 3 quart au gratin dish and bake, uncoverd, 2-1/2 hours until light caramel in color.
