minecraft skyblock is very fun

2024-06-19

minecraft is the most sold game of all time. it's an amazing sandbox, with lots of opportunities for creative solutions and player expression. that being said, its progression kinda sucks. or rather, there is barely any progression to begin with.

that's why skyblock is so fun. it's one of the oldest and most popular player-created "challenges" in minecraft, and it's very, very simple. you spawn on a little island made out of dirt with one tree and some essentials needed to generate infinite cobblestone, and there's an island a little bit away with some other fun items, including obsidian to travel to the nether dimension (which is also a tiny island).

to progress, you need to come up with creative and fun solutions to otherwise trivial problems, like getting iron. skyblock's progression is fun, because it's slow. that doesn't mean it's too grindy or boring though, it always feels like you're making progress, and carefully planning out the use of your limited resources feels great.

me and my best friend have been playing for a few days now, and we're still progressing pretty consistently.

early on in our game, our small tree farm in front of the sunrise.

after gathering some blocks, you may want to bridge to the sand island. from there, you can construct a nether portal.

another cool thing to build is a mob farm, which unlocks a whole new world of progression from rare drops. you also get music discs! (we may have cheated in a jukebox).

i really recommend trying out skyblock with a friend. i'll leave you with some images, if you want.

fishing in front of the sunset is pretty relaxing
