* WAVES ** OBJECTIVES 1. Describe the nature of waves 2. Appreciate the importance of waves in disaster science 3. Simulate waves using pHET ** CONTENT A wave is any disturbance that moves through matter or space and transfers energy from one specific place to another. There are two types of waves *** MECHANICAL WAVE These require a medium or a matter of in order to ravel, Mechanical waves are created when the molecules in the medium collide and the energy is transferred from one molecule to another Basically, they need some sort of matter in order to travel. **** TRANSVERSE A transverse waves causes the particles in matter to move at a right angle or perpendicular to the direction of the waves in order to generate a transverse with a slingky, you need to move it up and down To make this simple, this is a wave vibrating att rightt angles to tthe direction of its propagation **** LONGITUDINAL The second type of mechanical wave is known as longitudinal wave or compressional wave The motion of the medium is parallel to the direction of the waves. The particles of the medium move in the same direction in which the wave moves *** ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVE These can travel through an empty space, Elecromagnetic waves are produced by the motion of charged particles and the transition of electrons between the energy levels within atoms and radioactive nuclei Basically we dont need some sort of matter in order to travel, Examples of these are wifi, bluetootch, xrays, gamma rays, radio, microwaves, etc *** PARTS **** CREST The crest is the high points of the wave **** TROUGHS The throughs is the low points of a wave **** AMPLITUDE The maximum displacement of the rest position to the high point of the wave. If you have a high point of a wave, it has alot of energy, the opposite if is a low point **** SEA LEVEL The undisturbed position of the matter, its not a part of the wave **** WAVE HEIGHT Distance between the highest point to the lowest point **** WAVELENGTH The distance of two points in a wave thats moving in the same speed and same distance Represented by the word "lambda"
