* SEA SHELL TOURISM INDUSTRY
** OBJECTIVES
1. Understand the importance and history of seashell craft
   in The Philippines

2. Appreciate the resources we have as apart of cultural
   calues and;

3. Create a seashell craft ornament
** CONTENT
Mollusks  (sea Shells)  are  invertebrate  animals with  an
unsegmented    basically   symmetrical    body,   generally
consisting of head, foot, visceral hump and mantle\

The philippines is known for its beautiful seashells in our
country, this is not surprising  as sea shells usually come
from  the  shoreline, and  since  the  country has  a  rich
collection of sandy beaches, this is the reason why we have
this industry in the first place

The philippines is  also known for the place  with 5000 (?)
kinds of mollusks aka seashells.

Here in the  Philippines, sea shells are  found in Bacolod,
visiting during  the summer is a  good idea if you  want to
explore the mollusk species (or whatever teacher says)

*** HISTORY OF SHELL TRADE IN THE PHILIPPINES
The  helmet shell  "Cassis cornuta"  or budyong  are widely
blown by farmers and fishermen  using the mouths as a means
of communication

Shells were  also used as  a personal adorment  using early
Filipino settlers,  The abolone  shell "Kapin"  Haliotis is
reportedly being  used in  the healing practices  among the
indigenous Tambalam communities in Sangat Palawan

The meat of  mollusks on the other hand  forms an essential
part  of  the diet  among  the  coastal people  around  the
country and for those families

The shells  have become the status  symbols among prominent
people and fashion practitioners in some parts of the world

1. HArd but brtittle
2. Easily broken when dropped on a hard surface or hit by a
   hand object

3. WHen polished it has shiny pearl-like surface

*** TYPES OF SHELLS

1. Ornamental  shells are  shells  that  are exploited  for
   their whole devorative value, used as souvenir items and
   decorations

2. Rare  shells are  shells  sometimes  endemic species  of
   mollusks that are usually found in the deep seas

3. Commercial shells  are mollusks  that are  harvested for
   their nacre or mother pearl.

4. Shell Crafts/ Handicrafts refers  to the product made by
   shells   or    in   combination   with    other   native
   raw-materials, they  are usually handcrafted  by skilled
   individuals
