Been a while since my last entry. I had started a few entries but never completed them. Oh well. If I've done everything correct, my phlog is now on circumlunar.space. I want to thank solderpunk [1] for granting me asylum here. Of course, since the last time I posted the Gophpocalypse happened [2] and there was much talk about decentralization. Personally, it did not affect me since my humble gopher hole is very basic and only relies on concatenation. But it doesn't mean that I don't disagree with the notion, hence the relocation. It's time that we cast the seeds into the wind and see where that takes us. The new digs are an exercise in simplicity which I appreciate and hope to embrace. Regarding conservatism and hierarchy [3], I am a proponent of some conservatism and most of my experiments are simple problems with hopefully simple solutions. I enjoy seeing my content working on UMN Gopher. Would new itemtypes be useful? Sure. Solderpunk's SSH example would be a good solution to implement. We already have an itemtype for spiderspace, telnet, and so on, so it's not unprecedented. This has already been discussed, but most of the content we're producing does not lend itself to a strong hierarchical organizational structure. That's fine. But I'm cautious about "improving" gopher and just creating another world wide web. I'm going to leave with some lyrics from Butter 08's Degobrah: Listen, I'm not trying to tell you how to live your life I'm just saying there are a lot of things out there That are really important to people that I don't find much importance in -- Whether it's eat squishies or playing mini golf Don't look at me; I'm not a role model This is what I do It might not be the right answer for you Do what you gotta do; join an intergalactic youth community Do something with yourself!
