Unintended hiatus ----------------- Hey gopherers, I am ashamed to return so late, leaving you hanging after a somewhat enthusiastic first entry. More so I have sinned, so to say, I initially aspired to get into gopher to try and lead myself into a more simple and minimalistic tech user. In doing so I was led to YouTube and got hooked on watching Luke Smith's videos but it spiraled into me being a heavy YouTube addict, subscribing to a bunch of channels related to tech and gaming. When I was done with watching updates on subscriptions I would mindlessy scroll through the main feed always on the lookout for something interesting. Following that trend I built myself sort of a HTPC, combining the Asrock A300 with a Ryzen 3400G so I could comfortably watch YouTube from the bed. ... Sigh. I could blame Corona Virus for this mindless spending, but I don't want to - I'm at fault here. Have I mentioned I'm somewhat of a ThinkPad hoarder? I have four of them in my flat and there's one more at my parent's house. At least they are all older ones, the newest is a X230i, so not to much money spent on them. Now, to make the best use of these purchases I planned to make the X230i a server, since it's fairly quiet and by using an mSATA for the OS, I can put one SATA drive in the laptop and one into the dock, making for a poor man's NAS. Although many will probably think this is inefficent, I am using OpenBSD for this because it's my favorite OS and I want to use it more. So far I only got the OS installed, no extra drives yet because I have yet to check health of the drives I have lying around. So when I put one in, I'll setup minidlna (or readymedia as it's supposed to be called now) and use it to stream video to the HTPC. Tested it out from my Desktop to the HTPC, somehow Kodi couldn't find the server but VLC worked like a charm just as all those years ago when I first learned of this cool software. Anyway, that shall be it for today.
