------------------------------------------------------------ Writing scifi, (zaibatsu), 12/03/2018 ------------------------------------------------------------ There are a few gopher projects out there that I interpret as encouragements to write sci-fi[1][2]. There is more to them, but they are that to me, at least in part. I've setup accounts on both (thanks sysadmins!) I've only started writing a bit on the Dome. Sci-fi is not a strong point for me. I enjoy sci-fi casually, but I find the genre a bit intimidating for one reasons: the hardcore fans. The books and movies are awesome, but I can't follow them religiously. Maybe I'm over-thinking it, and most sci-fi fans really don't care how deep into things you are. Sometimes I get the impression that there is a barrier to entry, that I'm not quite fan enough. Thankfully, I don't care that much. I can enjoy sci-fi, even if others can't understand my brand of enjoyment. As for the dome and the cosmic voyage, I'm excited to have a little fun. I have two main characters in mind; one for each site. The characters are deeply connected, though not presently. There is a loose connection to the Schismatrix universe here (you'll recognize Wells, the Carbon Clique, and maybe a few other little things,) but I'm not a Sterling expert, and so the connection will remain loose/amateur. There's a book by Mo Willems titled "Watch Me Throw the Ball!" in which an elephant asks as piggy if it knows the secret to throwing a ball. The piggy replies "Sure. Have fun," to which the elephant replies "Fun?! Throwing this ball is not easy! It takes skill! It takes practice! It takes skill and practice! I worked very hard to learn how to throw a ball." I'm the piggy. I want to write sci-fi to have fun. I don't have skill, and I don't have much practice. I'm going for it. I think that's what these sites are for anyway.
