Learning to knit (circumlunar.space), 12/05/2019 ------------------------------------------------------------ I'm learning to knit. Not because I need another hobby, or even because I like to knit; my wife knits, and I figure it would be kind of cool to understand her hobby, and to be able to sit and knit together. First, we did the cast on. I can't recall which type she showed me (long tail, short tail?) but it wasn't so bad. Once that was done, the knitting started. She does some continental method or something, but I'm using a less exotic one. Hey, I'm new. She wanted me to buy some super nice yarn. The stuff she uses is spendy, but exceptional quality. That's fine- she makes beautiful stuff with it, so I get it. Me, on the other hand- I'm going to make a scarf. It's going to be an uneven, ugly wreck of a scarf. So, I need some super cheap acrylic yarn from *mart. We happen to be at Michaels and I settle on some cheap yarn in manly brown-and-tan tones for about $5. My wife makes my day by whipping out her phone with a 50% off coupon code; man, I love you. $2.50 and we're out the door. Anyway, the knitting is going fine. I've got somewhat of a rhythm down, and I've gotten past the point where I'm having to get help if some little thing goes wrong. I've forgotten how to do the cast on by now, but I'm sure she'll help me again. The scarf will officially take forever. I set a goal to finish by next Christmas. Not 2019, we're talking 2020. Lofty, but I've got other hobbies. Mostly I knit a row here or there when we're sitting together, then I move on. I think my wife enjoys the company, even if I don't knit for very long. And it's good for me to do "something else" every once in a while!
