My desktop today (zaibatsu.circumlunar.space), 03/02/2020 ------------------------------------------------------------ It is fun to share about one's computer setup from time to time. Here's how things look recently: - Still using openbox/lxde as a manual tiling wm. I like the control, and I have the hotkeys setup to make things quick. If I can complete a career shift, I'll be going to 100% text-only, but right now that's not possible, so this still works for me. - I'm still using a laptop as my main machine. - I've added two external monitors. One on HDMI, and the other on VGA. - The monitor on my left has email. I do a fair bit of email, and I like to stay on top of it. There are no unread messages in the three accounts that are showing on the screen. - The monitor on my right has a chat system for one of my clients on half the screen, and two terminal windows on the other half. This is my "live data" monitor. During this covid thing, I've had the "watch" utility updating some headlines from notfox.com pulled with "lynx -dump" every 5 minutes, in one terminal. In the other terminal I've had a cli utility called "mop" pulling stock values, also every 5 minutes. I don't care much about the news or the markets, but I've been interested to see how they correlate during these current events. The 5 minute update interval is on purpose: I don't want to be looking at this nonsense every few sections, I want updates that aren't pressing on me. If I know that they're set that way, I just won't look as much. - My wm provides virtual desktops. I've configured 5. I've tacked everything on the external monitors to all desktops, so that when I switch between them only the laptop screen changes. - I still use dmenu to launch programs, because there is no other reasonable way. It works perfectly with openbox. That is all for now. I've had to clean the desk up a bit to make room for the monitors, so that's a good thing. The other nice thing about these external monitors is, I can just focus on what I want to in the middle, and let all the annoying stuff that I like to keep track of take up the peripheral space. I can glance at things as needed.
