Well, I'm finally on the road. We've been fixing up our place in Fulton, MO, and now I'm heading to AZ by train to get our things and bring them back. It's about 7pm local time, and since it's summer, the sun isn't quite setting yet. We're traveling through mostly farm land and forest. Missouri is beautiful, but it's not quite the same kind of beauty that I'm used to on the west coast. It's a very homogeneous beauty, which is hardly a reasonable complaint, but it's new for me. In Arizona, Oregon, and California, for example- along with several other western states- you transition very rapidly between different types of scenery while traveling. Missouri is not quite as varied. It is green and inviting though, especially from within an air conditioned vehicle. Amtrak is nice so far. I've never user them before, so I didn't really know what to expect. The wifi on the train is good, at least for my uses (ssh and email.) They claim a restriction on video/audio streaming, which doesn't matter at all to me. The speed, so far, is good. I think that it's great for a moving vehicle going through the back woods. Maybe there are no back woods any more. We're about to stop in Sedalia. I suppose I'll try to write more as the trip goes on, here and on my other phlogs.
