Going to finish grinding on it and then put it on the 365 case. Then maybe tear into the 2165 and see if there's something there that's just easily spotted. It hasn't made a cut yet. I don't know if the coil slipped or what. It will fire up but not stay running and not make rpm. #Post#: 68498-------------------------------------------------- Re: Whats on your bench today By: 660magnum Date: January 24, 2016, 7:37 am --------------------------------------------------------- Cut4fun had a 272 about a month back that reacted like your 2165. It showed decent compression but didn't run right on top end. It sort of like it wouldn't come out of four stroking? I had made a cut or two with the saw a few years ago and it run just like my 372's. He said it seemed as though the ring was fluttering when you gave it full throttle. Bottom line is a new ring fixed it! I happen to visit his shop after the fact and looked at the ring. At the position of the transfer on the PTO side there was severe rounding of the ring on the top side. There was noticeable rounding of the ring on the starter side transfer and at the exhaust. Then it was mentioned that the saw was a 268 with a after market 272 cylinder. The saw was back together and gone but I would have to assume that the ports in the cylinder were not beveled correctly, and in particular, the PTO side transfer. To look closely at this ring, besides the rounding at the PTO transfer, the ring was thinner at this position. The saw had been in firewood duty for some three years before it started running poorly. Ten years ago, I repaired a model airplane engine that had been fitted with the polymid (Plastic Cage) main bearings. Both bearings had lost their cages which naturally went up through the engine. It didn't hurt the chromed cylinder but the ring's edges were rounded off. I replaced the bearings and the ring. The morel to this story is - Look at the ring's seating area against the cylinder. The edges must be crisp and sharp. Unless of course, you have already put a new ring in it? #Post#: 68499-------------------------------------------------- Re: Whats on your bench today By: Gatekeeper Date: January 24, 2016, 7:49 am --------------------------------------------------------- I'll look at it. It's apart using the bottom end for timing numbers. I have another tank on the way to put #3 together ported I hope on Monday or Tuesday. I want to keep one stock together. #Post#: 68679-------------------------------------------------- Re: Whats on your bench today By: jmester Date: January 28, 2016, 1:59 pm --------------------------------------------------------- Finished up a Stihl 290/009 and a 200t. 290 need new crank seals, rings and some carb work. Also trued up the engine pan and cylinder. 200t and 009 need some carb work. All are running and tuned. Also had to fix a leaky 660 oil pump and replace a fuel tank on another 660. Still waiting on my heating element for my heated handle 660. #Post#: 68698-------------------------------------------------- Re: Whats on your bench today By: 3000 FPS Date: January 28, 2016, 7:26 pm --------------------------------------------------------- The 660 sounds like it will be great with the heated handle. I have never used one before and really do not know how well the work. I worked on a MS362 and a MS460 today. They both run good but have been beat up pretty good. Going to the Stihl dealer tomorrow for parts. #Post#: 68718-------------------------------------------------- Re: Whats on your bench today By: Gatekeeper Date: January 29, 2016, 6:26 am --------------------------------------------------------- The heated handles on my 266 get warm enough that on a 40 degree day you need gloves to turn them on. I have a 371/365 on my bench. Ported it last night. Going to run it today. I threw my muffler on it so I could test it and I'll get on modding his today sometime. #Post#: 68719-------------------------------------------------- Re: Whats on your bench today By: 660magnum Date: January 29, 2016, 6:43 am --------------------------------------------------------- I have a Dolmar 6800 with heated handles. They don't get hot enough to burn your hands but they do get warm if you turn them on. #Post#: 68720-------------------------------------------------- Re: Whats on your bench today By: Chris-PA Date: January 29, 2016, 9:15 am --------------------------------------------------------- The bench is covered in junk from several emergency repair projects (cars, trucks and tractors that broke). And I wasn't going to do a chainsaw project this winter - but I'm bored. There's a decent 42cc Poulan engine on the shelf, and I just ordered a good carcass with a blown engine. So it looks like I'm going to clear off the bench and come up with something else strange to do to a plastic Poulan for entertainment. ***************************************************** (DIR) Previous Page (DIR) Next Page
