Haha, the irony of anyone here chiding a gopher project as being "late".

Anyway, the critique is off. There are plenty of places and people without
ANY direct internet access, yet some SMS. Amazingly, most of the world is
not on Faceborg 24/7 with urban infrastructure and smart phones...

Rah rah for the SMS idea. I'd use it, if only for the occasional
       Gopherpedia query from the boonies...

       >> Hello everybody!
>>
>>=C2=A0 =C2=A0I have developed a new kind of gopher mole, which woul=
       d have suited
>> gopher
>> back when it was popular, as it pairs telephony technology with go=
       pher!
>>
>>=C2=A0 =C2=A0Get ready to jump into a gopher hole like no other on =
       gopher space, I
>> now
>> proudly present the world's first gopher-to-telephony gateway =
       interface!
>> Now,
>> you can fill in gopher forms using the latest in voice transcripti=
       on
>> services.
>> Yes, you heard me right, with this new one of a kind gopher mole, =
       my
>> server
>> will call any phone number you give it and request of you using vo=
       ice to
>> record your guestbook posting.=C2=A0 This guestbook posting is the=
       n saved
>> directly
>> on the server as a convenient MP3 file and then transcripted into =
       text for
>> future visitors can both hear your lovely voice and read your tran=
       scribed
>> text.
>>
>>=C2=A0 =C2=A0Now, you might be asking yourself...=C2=A0 Does this r=
       equire some sort of
>> fancy
>> new modern gopher client?=C2=A0 Nope, not at all.=C2=A0 This proof=
       -of-concept
>> technology
>> even works by using your PCs tried and true telnet command program=
       .=C2=A0 So,
>> this
>> gopher mole will work in everything in the gopher market from toda=
       y to
>> back in
>> the 70s.
>>
>>=C2=A0 =C2=A0Upon visiting the mole, you just use a standard gopher=
        type 7 to submit
>> the
>> phone number you wish gopher to call you at.=C2=A0 The mole will t=
       hen use some
>> telephony magic to make an outbound call to any phone number you<b=
       r>
       >> provided, it
>> will even do a quick check to make sure you entered in a valid wor=
       king
>> phone
>> number using various carrier APIs.=C2=A0 Then seconds from submitt=
       ing your
>> phone
>> number, your phone will magically ring and an automated message wi=
       ll play
>> back
>> asking you to record your guestbook message after the tone.=C2=A0 =
       Then you can
>> simply hang up the phone and watch the magic happen.=C2=A0 The rec=
       ording should
>> appear about 5 seconds after the phone is hung up, and the transcr=
       iption
>> can
>> take as long as 2 minutes, depending on the length of your message=
       .
>>
>> You can try it out here, currently the gopher hole isn't yet p=
       ublically
>> available, as I wanted to you lovely a sneak peek:
>> gopher://<a href=3D"http://gopher.veroneau.net/1apps/guestbook2" t=
       arget=3D"_blank">gopher.veroneau.net/1apps/guestbook2
>>
>>=C2=A0 =C2=A0My next goal is to enable this same functionality usin=
       g SMS messages,
>> but
>> that could incur charges on the users' end depending where the=
       y are and if
>> they are charged for long distance SMS messages.
>>
>>=C2=A0 =C2=A0Finally, I plan on making a complete sms2gopher gatewa=
       y, where you can
>> text
mobile
>> device in the entire known universe, as long as it supports SMS th=
       at is.
>> You
>> will even be-able to instruct it to call you with a full text-to-s=
       peech
>> recording of an entire gopher document!
>>
>>=C2=A0 =C2=A0For privacy reasons, your phone number is not stored, =
       or displayed on
>> this
>> guestbook.=C2=A0 So go ahead and show off this rather unique guest=
       book
>> experience to
>> Subject:[gopher] Gopher 2.0?
>>
>> Hello everybody!
>>
>> ? I have developed a new kind of gopher mole, which would have sui=
       ted
>> gopher
>> back when it was popular, as it pairs telephony technology with go=
       pher!
>>
>> ? Get ready to jump into a gopher hole like no other on gopher spa=
       ce, I
>> now
>> proudly present the world's first gopher-to-telephony gateway =
       interface!?
>> Now,
>> you can fill in gopher forms using the latest in voice transcripti=
       on
>> services.?
>> Yes, you heard me right, with this new one of a kind gopher mole, =
       my
>> server
>> will call any phone number you give it and request of you using vo=
       ice to
>> record your guestbook posting.? This guestbook posting is then sav=
       ed
>> directly
>> on the server as a convenient MP3 file and then transcripted into =
       text for
>> future visitors can both hear your lovely voice and read your tran=
       scribed
>> text.
>>
>> ? Now, you might be asking yourself...? Does this require some sor=
       t of
>> fancy
>> new modern gopher client?? Nope, not at all.? This proof-of-concep=
       t
>> technology
>> even works by using your PCs tried and true telnet command program=
       .? So,
>> this
>> gopher mole will work in everything in the gopher market from toda=
       y to
>> back in
>> the 70s.
>>
>> ? Upon visiting the mole, you just use a standard gopher type 7 to=
        submit
>> the
>> phone number you wish gopher to call you at.? The mole will then u=
       se some
>> telephony magic to make an outbound call to any phone number you<b=
       r>
       >> provided, it
>> will even do a quick check to make sure you entered in a valid wor=
       king
>> phone
>> number using various carrier APIs.? Then seconds from submitting y=
       our
>> phone
>> number, your phone will magically ring and an automated message wi=
       ll play
>> back
>> asking you to record your guestbook message after the tone.? Then =
       you can
>> simply hang up the phone and watch the magic happen.? The recordin=
       g should
>> appear about 5 seconds after the phone is hung up, and the transcr=
       iption
>> can
>> take as long as 2 minutes, depending on the length of your message=
       .
>>
>> You can try it out here, currently the gopher hole isn't yet p=
       ublically
>> available, as I wanted to you lovely a sneak peek:
>> gopher://<a href=3D"http://gopher.veroneau.net/1apps/guestbook2" t=
       arget=3D"_blank">gopher.veroneau.net/1apps/guestbook2
>>
>> ? My next goal is to enable this same functionality using SMS mess=
       ages,
>> but
>> that could incur charges on the users' end depending where the=
       y are and if
>> they are charged for long distance SMS messages.
>>
>> ? Finally, I plan on making a complete sms2gopher gateway, where y=
       ou can
>> text
>> a number a valid gopher URI, and browse gopher from absolutely any=
        mobile
>> device in the entire known universe, as long as it supports SMS th=
       at is.?
>> You
>> will even be-able to instruct it to call you with a full text-to-s=
       peech
>> recording of an entire gopher document!
>>
>> ? For privacy reasons, your phone number is not stored, or display=
       ed on
>> this
>> guestbook.? So go ahead and show off this rather unique guestbook<=
       br>
       >> experience to
>> friends and family.? It's sure to put a smile on their face.<b=
       r>
       >>
>> Best Regards,
>> ? Kevin Veroneau
It is an ambitious plan but rather useless. Comparing to the Internet conne=
