Well I had a Stihl MS 290 come in at work today that was locked
up. The saw looked fairly new and was pretty clean.
So first thing I did was pull the muffler and look at the piston
       and cylinder. That looked good.
So I then pulled the recoil off to see if it was locked up and
       it was ok.
I tried grabbing the flywheel by hand to turn it over and no go.
So I pulled the bar and chain off and took off the sprocket and
then the clutch. Could see no problem there and it was still
       locked up.
So at this point I decided to pull off the flywheel and there it
was. A small nail stuck to the magnet on the back side of the
flyway and I could see where it had dug into the case.
Put her all back together and it fired right up and ran great.
       You just never know.
I also had a Stihl concrete saw come in today that just needed
some general maintenance. It ran good.
One of the things I started doing with every saw that comes in
now is do a compression test. I have wasted more time working
on what I thought was some other problem when it was just low
compression. The Stihl concrete saw was 135 psi.
I also had a old Promac 610 come in for repairs. It had 150 psi
on the compression but the spark arrester was plugged up.
It is like a mental check list that I go through when checking
       them out.

Al got a 200T cheap from a stihl dealer like that once.
Something was blocking flywheel and the dealer threw it in the
       pile.
Good finding it Roger for someones sake.

Yea I figured the owner will be happy to know that was all it
was. It took me about 40 min to find it and put it all back
together and have it running. That is another thing I have
become really quick at tearing these saws down and getting them
       back together. Just practice.

Worked on a Husqvarna 61 today. Owner said it would start but
not stay running. First the fuel line was all cracked and when
pulled off the carb it fell apart. The carburetor diaphragms
were stiff as a board. The gasket between the carb and intake
had a big tear. The gasket between the intake and cylinder was
       missing half of it.
So replaced the fuel line, installed a kit in the carb, and made
the gaskets. Saw started, ran, idled good.
Next was a Poulan 3314 that I put a new pulley and recoil spring
       on. Worked fine when completed.
Then there is this Shindiawa string trimmer. It would run about
5 minutes or less get real hot and then die. It would not
restart until it cooled back down. Checked spark and is ok.
Compression good before and after. Did a pressure and vacuum
test and is ok. Put spark plug on top of cylinder and pulled
rope and showed good spark. Muffler is a catalytic type so
tried replacing the muffler and no go. Spark arrester ok.
Tried cracking the fuel cap open to see if it was venting ok.
Venting was ok. Replaced the fuel filter and bingo that was
it. It seems that the filter would gradually slow fuel
delivery down causing it to get lean overheat and then
eventually die. Ran it for 30 minutes straight with no issues
and restarts on one pull every time.

Meant to post this here, not in its own thread.
Maroon 42cc poulan came in yesterday evening by a firewood
cutter. All covers bar chain etc off with muffler hanging.
While owner was still here. I seen both bolts T30 were still in
there and gasket and heat shield was still in place. So I just
tightened them up to make sure threads not all wollerded out in
the cylinder. Said you put it all back together you can take it
       back now. No charge.
Said it had been trouble free for 3 years so far.

He said this is quite embarrassing. But he couldnt figure out
the 2 bolts inside muffler and thought they were missing. Plus
he admitted he didnt have the T30 to tighten them if he had
       anyways.
No biggie for me and know I will get repeat business from him in
       future.
Sort of there myself. It cost me $5 long long time ago at a
dolmar echo dealer, that got me into all this stuff back when I
learned a 3750 was scored I had just bought of ebay. Est to
fix $200+ back then, I did it myself for $16 and cleaned
       everything up.

Just to explain for the guy missing it. It was those silver
mufflers with 2 inside bolts with a outside cover over them with
a single nut on a stud deal.
